Originally built in 1922, the King George County courthouse faced the need for additional space and stronger security measures to better serve county residents. The courthouse design committee, which included a member of the board of supervisors, looked holistically at the building and considered all user groups when designing the new courthouse. We also made cost-conscious decisions to balance the county’s needs with their requested price range.

The upgraded sallyport area and holding rooms offer a clear separation between detainees and staff, beginning the moment law enforcement officials bring detainees onto the premises and continuing until they appear in the courtroom. Because of the stressful nature of many court cases, our designers incorporated natural light on both lobby area levels to facilitate a peaceful environment for people waiting to enter the courtroom. Offices within the building also offer natural light for courthouse staff.

Designed to adapt to King George County’s projected growth, the new courthouse is expandable by up to four courtrooms in the coming years. The courthouse’s location next to the public safety building and animal shelter provides the King George community with a cohesive government center.
