The station's drive-through apparatus bays house an engine, tower, and ambulance. Living quarters flow naturally between bunk rooms, kitchen, dayroom, and offices, optimizing crew movement and response time. The design allows for additional bays as community needs expand.
Fire Station 17 prioritizes crew safety through advanced contamination prevention. A dedicated decontamination room isolates harmful substances before they reach living spaces. The station includes specialized laundry facilities for turnout gear maintenance. As the first in Hanover County with a dedicated fitness room, it helps crews maintain the physical conditioning essential for emergency response.
The station's conference room supports multiple essential functions: emergency incident command, personnel training, and public gatherings. Four firefighters work each shift as part of the 12-person team serving this district.
The station's location strengthens emergency response capabilities by reducing pressure on the Mechanicsville and Henry stations. The Federal Emergency Management Agency supported this expansion through its Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program.
While future stations will incorporate site-specific adaptations, Fire Station 17's core features will be reproduced across Hanover County. This standardization improves maintenance efficiency, supports consistent operations, and creates familiar work environments for personnel rotating between locations.
The station demonstrates Hanover County's dedication to both community safety and firefighter well-being through effective integration of protective features, operational efficiency, and public spaces.
