Meet Stephen Ng
Stephen Ng

Stephen recently entered his third year studying mechanical engineering at the University of Virginia after spending the summer interning at Moseley. His experience reinforced the value of a collaborative approach across all disciplines, and the satisfaction that comes with efficiently resolving challenges as a team. In his career, Stephen seeks to continue building a strong technical skill set that will support his goal of serving and ultimately improving his community.

Why did you choose to study engineering?

I chose to study mechanical engineering because it combines my ability to use problem-solving and critical thinking skills with my passion for serving my community.

Is this the first time you’ve done an internship?

This was my second mechanical engineering internship since starting college.

If you had to describe your Moseley intern experience using three words, what would they be?

Effective, rewarding, and collaborative.

What are some of the assignments you’ve been given?

Throughout the summer, I worked in the K-12 sector, modeling existing conditions for Chancellor Middle and High School, Rodney Thompson Middle School, as well as creating demolition plans for Meadowbrook High School.

Stephen took part in a ramp build along with fellow Moseley interns. Through this experience, they supported RampsRVA’s mission to provide modular wheelchair ramps for individuals in need.

Did you encounter any challenges during your internship? What did you learn from them?

Yes, I encountered multiple unique challenges. Through them, I learned the importance of breaking down problems and consulting with coworkers in order to cultivate a solution.

How has the actual experience differed from your expectations of it?

Moseley surprised me with how much they encourage additional learning, through things like Moseley University and encouraging us to understand work from different specialties. I believe these methods optimize our ability to complete work effectively and develop common ground between employees across all disciplines.

Have any of your assignments required you to collaborate with any non-engineers involved in design (ex: architects, interior designers, sustainability coordinators, etc.)?

Through my projects, I collaborated with several architects.

What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned or the best advice you’ve received during the internship?

I have learned so much about HVAC design through working collaboratively on large-scale projects.
