Mark Heckman Announced as Senior Living Sector Leader

Moseley announced Mark Heckman, AIA, as senior living sector leader, building on the firm’s decades of work designing communities across the country. The appointment positions Moseley to meet growing demand for senior housing and care communities as the nation’s aging population expands.

As sector leader, Mark will direct the strategic vision of Moseley’s senior living practice and oversee project teams serving clients in multiple markets nationwide. His priorities include advancing design approaches that integrate health and wellness features while fostering connections between residents and the broader community. These elements support a sense of belonging throughout each stage of residents’ lives.

“Senior living design is a relatively new sector in the history of architecture, so there are still many opportunities for design innovation,” Mark said.

Approval processes for senior living projects now stretch to three or more years in many jurisdictions, which creates significant obstacles for developers. Mark’s understanding of regulatory requirements across diverse markets will guide how the sector navigates these challenges and advances projects that recognize senior living communities as integral to healthy neighborhoods.

From Moseley’s Baltimore office, Mark has led major projects that address the evolving needs of aging populations through design solutions that balance operational requirements with resident experience. He has practiced architecture for more than four decades since earning his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Cincinnati, with a career focused exclusively on housing and community design.

Dora Kay served as the leader of Moseley’s senior living sector since 2020. She is currently leading expansion initiatives for the firm’s Fairfax, Va., office while broadening her practice to serve clients across multiple markets and sectors.
