Meet Julia Christensen
Julia Christensen

Julia recently began her fifth and final year studying architecture after interning for Moseley’s K-12 sector over the summer. Her love of creativity and a strong desire to help people fuel her career trajectory. In her journey as an emerging designer, she is interested in K-12 work and hopes to use her skills to help shape educational environments that support young learners.

Why did you choose to study architecture?

I chose architecture because I have a creative mind, and I wanted to channel that into a lucrative career that would help people.

What building typologies are you most interested in?

I’m most interested in K-12 work. Creating spaces for children is uniquely challenging, as it requires architects to consider what makes the best learning atmosphere and to design for longevity in a rapidly changing landscape.

How did you learn about the internship?

I found out about this internship while researching online. I was looking for architectural firms in Virginia and applied.

If you had to describe your Moseley intern experience using three words, what would they be?

Welcoming, educational, coordinated.

What are some of the assignments you’ve been given?

I worked on quality management system (QMS) detailing and also got to work on an HVAC replacement project for Meadowbrook High School.

During her internship, Julia worked on a space planning charrette project. She and her fellow interns presented their work, receiving constructive, collaborative feedback from colleagues.

What assignments have you enjoyed the most?

I have enjoyed working on the QMS and construction detailing the most. I liked learning more about the details and composition of a building.

How has the actual experience differed from your expectations of it?

The office is pretty large, so it can be a challenge to get to know all of your coworkers. But everyone is so nice and friendly, it makes up for it!

What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned or the best advice you’ve received during the internship?

I’ve learned the importance of coordination and balance, two areas where Moseley really finds its strengths.
