Innovation Elementary School Wins Platinum Design Award

Innovation Elementary School in Prince William County earned the Platinum Design Award. The three-story building accommodates 800 to 850 students on compact sites while preserving parkland and maintaining community access to the gymnasium, media center and athletic fields. Natural light reaches over 90% of learning spaces through expansive windows and skylights. Flexible environments include extended learning areas, a maker space and a presentation stair, with individual thermal controls and dimmable lighting in every classroom. The design adapts to sites ranging from five to 19 acres and serves as Prince William County's first three-story elementary prototype, guiding construction of Woodbridge Area Elementary School.

Patrick Henry K-8 School and Recreation Center Wins Silver Design Award

Patrick Henry K-8 School and Recreation Center in Alexandria earned the Silver Design Award. The facility serves students during school hours and opens its gymnasium, theater and multi-purpose spaces to Alexandria residents after hours. Glass-walled classrooms make learning visible throughout corridors marked by blue, yellow and green wayfinding. The LEED Silver certified building features a cafetorium that transforms from dining hall to performance venue and a media center that accommodates library, technology and collaborative learning in one adaptable space.

Walker-Grant Middle School, Fredericksburg, Va.

Walker-Grant Middle School Wins People's Choice Award

Walker-Grant Middle School in Fredericksburg earned the People's Choice Award. The two-story media center features floor-to-ceiling windows that create transparency and appropriate scale, establishing an inviting presence for students and families. Each grade has a distinct color identity: jade for sixth grade, purple for seventh and blue for eighth, with these hues converging in shared spaces where students from every grade gather. The flexible auditeria combines cafeteria and auditorium functions for dining, assemblies, performances and community events. Public spaces including the gymnasium and auditeria can be secured separately from academic wings, allowing the building to host community events after hours.
