Moseley appointed its first-ever class of design principals, advancing the firm’s mission to deliver exceptional interdisciplinary design across all projects. This important move elevates design leadership firm-wide and marks a pivotal milestone in Moseley’s evolution from its 2025 strategic plan toward its ambitious 2030 vision.

The newly appointed design principals include:

·         Kenny Durrett (Richmond office)

·         Jason Maloney (Richmond office)

·         Andrew Smolak (Richmond office)

·         Daniel Whitmire (Harrisonburg office)

·         Aaron Zephir (Baltimore office)

These five professionals have consistently shaped the firm’s most celebrated work and will now take on expanded leadership roles in advancing Moseley’s design initiatives.

“If you’ve seen any of the work that’s really been recognized over the past 10 years from a design perspective in awards programs, chances are those projects had the input of one of these five individuals,” noted Stephen Halsey, who made the announcement during a firm-wide meeting on May 8.

The creation of the design principal position builds upon previous design excellence initiatives, including the establishment of the director of design role currently held by Billy Riggs, and the development of a design collaboration team that brings together representatives from architecture, structural engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, interior design, and sustainability.

In their new roles, the design principals will focus on strategic planning and design initiatives, ensuring firm-wide design standards are implemented consistently in every office and in every sector. They will work closely with managing principals to elevate design quality while fostering collaboration among all disciplines. A key responsibility will be outward-focused goals, including earning recognition of projects through design award programs.

“This is a very important evolution within our firm structure,” said President and CEO Jeff Hyder. “It provides additional growth opportunities for design talent within the firm and represents forward-thinking leadership as we continue to grow and evolve.”

The announcement comes as part of Moseley’s transition from its 2025 strategic plan to its Moseley 2030 plan, which will continue to emphasize design excellence as a foundational pillar of the firm’s vision to become a nationally recognized, innovative, interdisciplinary design leader.
