Sterling's path to energy modeling began at NASA, where she built predictive atmospheric models of Mars. She now brings that same analytical rigor to energy modeling at Moseley, developing detailed 3D building models that reveal how buildings consume energy and where they can do better. Her current focus is net-zero design, where individual design decisions translate into measurable real-world impact.
What attracted you to this profession?
With a background in astrophysics, I got my start building predictive atmospheric models of Mars at NASA. I’ve always loved digging into complex systems, but I realized I wanted to focus on making a more tangible impact here at home. Energy modeling lets me do that—at Moseley, I get to use the skills I’ve learned to help create efficient, sustainable buildings that make a difference for the people who use them.
What are the most important personality traits to have in your profession?
Our projects cover all kinds of new and existing buildings. For existing buildings, digging through some of the older as-built drawings definitely takes a bit of determination (and maybe a stronger pair of prescription glasses). More broadly, I think anyone working in sustainability really needs a dedication to both community and craft.
What’s a typical week in your job like?
As the title hints, my workweek is all about energy modeling! I build detailed 3D models of buildings that integrate mechanical, structural, electrical, and architectural plans. In practice, that means defining the building envelope and thermal zones, incorporating mechanical systems and central plants, and applying schedules, utility rates, and other factors that influence energy use or generation. These models help our teams understand how buildings consume energy and find ways to improve efficiency.
What's it like to work in your office?
My office is awesome! I get to learn from talented cubicle neighbors like Jasmine, a structural engineer, and Barbara, an architect. I love our twice-a-week office walks with people like Jessica, an interior designer. Plus, my Energy and Asset Management team—Kim and Ross—make our already meaningful work feel fun.
What’s the coolest thing you’re working on right now?
Right now, I’m working on energy modeling for a net-zero project—buildings that produce as much energy as they use. It’s exciting to see how design decisions translate into real-world energy savings and impact.
What’s your favorite thing to do outside of work?
I love growing food, community happenings, and trying new things. Recently, I’ve been trying out ballet, birdwatching, and hosting a book club. And as always, doing things I love with friends and family makes it all the more special.
What’s your favorite film?
Hard to pick just one, but some favorites are The Grand Budapest Hotel, Midnight in Paris, and The Imitation Game—I tend to enjoy movies with strong visuals and a bit of history.
