Fire station design requires an understanding of their unique operational needs and first responders' wellbeing. One design consideration that affects both is humidity control, as environmental quality determines both building and equipment efficiency and occupant comfort. Civic principal Chris Roman and mechanical engineering operations manager Tyler Whately will present on this topic at F.I.E.R.O.’s annual Fire Station Design Symposium in Greenville, S.C.
Their presentation, titled “Fire Station Humidity Control: A Holistic Approach to Functionality and Wellness,” will take place on Tuesday, September 22, at 2:40 p.m. The session will reflect the symposium’s goal to equip design teams to create healthy, efficient fire stations.
Envelope and HVAC Strategies
Because fire stations are routinely exposed to various indoor and outdoor moisture sources, it is crucial that the building envelope and HVAC system design are set up to manage fluctuations in air quality. During their presentation, Tyler and Chris will explore how adjustments to layout, a well-designed envelope and facility-appropriate HVAC systems can help create a more optimal, efficient environment.

Additionally, they will discuss how environmental quality affects more than just building efficiency and equipment. It directly impacts first responder health and wellness by either adding strain to or helping support comfort, restorative rest and, ultimately, job performance.
